Being born without wings in the Cursial Dunes is a rare trait. It's something that usually causes the Krye to be abandoned by it's parents, left to die at the hands of the devilish creatures that roam the sands. For this Krye, it was no different. When he was born without wings, and with a portion of his skull visible, it was seen as an ill omen. They left him upon the sands; fully expecting the demons and other beasts of the Cursial Dunes to do away with the youngling. Instead, somehow he survived it. When a beast came upon the Krye youngling it had thought him an easy snack; but he was born with a High Magic mark on his left eye that activated that day. The energies of his would-be killer were brutally removed from the beast's body, and plunged into his own core.
He had no need to eat, nor drink, instead thriving off the living energies of other beasts. That first taste of energy he had as a hatchling served to keep him well until he was old enough to understand more about the world. Except the way he viewed things was more feral in origins than others. He hadn't been brought up with a family to guide him, and was forced to learn things on his own. He came by the knowledge of speech through the devouring of energies from a dying Krye that he came across on his travels as a teen. The other Krye had been struck down by a sand beast, her wings broken and body shattered. She was barely even lucid when he took her life energies as his own. Her knowledge was passed onto him, as the life energies of living creatures seemed to pass on a type of 'memory' with each meal. That's when he discovered what he was, learned how to control the air currents, and even discovered more about that High Magic marking on his face.
It was called the "Helvuis" mark, and was a type of High Magic that had long been condemned because of it's orientation with Death Magics. It was what allowed for him to take the energies of others on as his own; it was always what caused a portion of his skull to be visible. It was a fairly rare magic to come by, so it was no surprise that he couldn't learn what exactly it was from the knowledge of that female Krye. He had to discover on his own how it worked exactly. For it wasn't just the memories and energies that he obsorbed with each feast. It was also powers.
By the time he had reached adulthood he had a better grasp of it. He even began to hunt certain creatures on the Cursial Dunes that could allow for him to travel to other areas. He took down a demon entity which could alter it's skeletal systems and regenerate physical matter (ie; muscles, skin, etc.). It was a power he had longed for, had seen the creatures making use of it for months and decided that if he could gain it and master it, then it would mean freedom from the Cursial Dunes. So he took it for his own, and weeks of practice later, he was able to alter his skeletal form and grow bone-wings from his back. The membrane that would crease across the bones like webbing was thin, but sturdy enough to allow for flight. The only problem was, the alteration to his bone structure couldn't remain permanent, so the bone-wings would eventually break off as his skeleton returned to normal. (The regenerative effects of this power caused the unnatural growths to wither away over time). |
